Neumann Shotgun Microphones for Professional Production

Neumann shotgun microphones provide highly directional sound capture for dialogue, filmmaking, broadcast and location recording where focused pickup and off-axis attenuation are important.

What Is a Neumann Shotgun Microphone?

A Neumann shotgun microphone is a directional microphone designed to capture sound primarily from the direction in which it is aimed while reducing sensitivity to sound arriving from other directions.

Shotgun microphones typically use an interference tube in combination with a directional capsule to achieve greater directivity than conventional microphone designs at relevant frequencies.

Where Are Neumann Shotgun Microphones Used?

• Film and video production: Capture dialogue while allowing the microphone to remain outside the camera frame.
• Location sound: Focus pickup toward the intended source in production environments with surrounding sound.
• Interviews: Provide directional speech capture for video and broadcast applications.
• Broadcast: Support dialogue, speech and production sound in professional workflows.

Understanding Shotgun Microphone Directionality

A shotgun microphone does not completely remove ambient noise. Its directional characteristics reduce sensitivity to sounds arriving from certain off-axis directions. Microphone placement, distance and the acoustic environment still have a major influence on the recorded result.

How to Choose a Neumann Shotgun Microphone

• Required pickup characteristics and directionality
• Distance between microphone and sound source
• Indoor or outdoor recording environment
• Self-noise, sensitivity and maximum SPL
• Boom, camera or other production setup
