Are Waterproof Lights More Durable Than Non-Waterproof Lights?

Fixtures rated IP65 or IP66 only demonstrate their advantages in environments exposed to rain, dust, or high humidity. When used exclusively indoors, a light's lifespan depends far more on component quality and thermal management than on its IP rating.
In fact, waterproof fixtures are typically built with fully sealed enclosures to prevent water ingress. While this improves environmental protection, it also makes heat dissipation more challenging unless the manufacturer incorporates an effective cooling design. For high-power LED fixtures in particular, excessive heat is one of the leading causes of lumen depreciation, shorter LED chip lifespan, and premature driver failure.

As a result, waterproof fixtures can sometimes deteriorate faster than standard indoor fixtures due to the additional thermal challenges of sealed designs. If your lighting installation is not exposed to rain, water, or high humidity, investing in waterproof fixtures is generally unnecessary.
