Change the material of Neutrik’s XLR Connectors
In the second quarter of this year, Neutrik will change the material of their XLR connectors from black chrome to KTL coating. You can follow the article to find out what this change brings to you. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Change the material of XLR Connectors

Previously, many black XLR connectors were coated with a layer of black chrome, a type of durable and conductive material. However, black chrome does not meet the RoHS & Reach standards and causes environmental pollution.
Therefore, Neutrik decided to replace black chrome with a new material called KTL coating (Kathodische Tauchlackierung). KTL coating is an electrostatic paint applied to the metal surface by electroplating.

KTL coating has many advantages, such as:
- Environmentally friendly, complying with RoHS and REACH.
- Corrosion-resistant, scratch-resistant and highly anti-static.
- Uniform color and long-lasting.

However, KTL coating also has some differences compared to black chrome that customers and users need to note:

- KTL coating is non-conductive while black chrome is conductive. This means that XLR connectors with KTL coating shells cannot be used for applications that require conductivity such as balanced audio connections or RF connections. In this case, customers and end-users should choose the version of XLR connector with nickel plating shells because nickel is still a conductive material.
- KTL coating may change the size of XLR connectors compared to black chrome. This may affect the connection and compatibility of XLR connectors with other devices. Therefore, you need to carefully check the size and accuracy of XLR connectors before purchasing and using.

This is an important step of Neutrik in improving the quality and safety of products as well as contributing to protecting the environment and human health. We hope you have a better understanding of Neutrik’s change in XLR connector materials and can choose the right product for your needs.
