The KM 183 is a condenser microphone with an omnidirectional pickup pattern that is independent of frequency. Its natural, transparent sound with very low natural noise and high sound pressure handling capabilities have made the KM 183 a worldwide studio standard for a wide range of applications, from classical pianos to heavy metal drums.

Faithful

While many microphones today are designed to add their own sonic impact, there are many applications that require a faithful reproduction of the original audio event, without adding or taking anything away. That is why the Neumann Series 180 microphones were created.

The Neumann 180 Series microphones include three members with different polar patterns: the KM 183 (omni), KM 184 (cardioid), and KM 185 (hypercardioid), thus covering most stage and studio applications. Since the 180 Series microphones are not modular, they are more cost-effective than the modular KM A and KM D Series (which offer a range of interchangeable capsules for analog and digital output stages).

Omnidirectional

Despite its attractive price, the KM 183 microphone offers state-of-the-art Neumann technology. The omnidirectional pickup pattern is uniform and largely independent of frequency. In practical use, there is no audible variation over a large pickup angle, which is important in multi-mic setups and for accurate stereo/surround imaging. The KM 183's pressure-sensitive diaphragm is balanced for a flat frequency response in the distributed field. In the free field, it has a high-range gain of approximately 7 dB at 10 kHz. Its innovative transformerless head amplifier provides a wide dynamic range of up to 127 dB and is carefully designed to maintain the acoustic integrity of the diaphragm. The KM 183 has a very low native noise of only 13 dB-A and is capable of handling high sound pressures up to 140 dB without distortion. Thanks to its low-resistance output stage, the KM 183 can transmit over cable lengths of up to 300 meters (1000 feet) without signal loss.

Application

The KM 183 is a versatile microphone for studio applications. The KM 183's transparent sound makes it an excellent microphone for natural-sounding instruments such as pianos, percussion, drums, acoustic guitars, strings, woodwinds, ensembles, choirs, etc. With its pressure-sensitive diaphragm, the KM 183's low-frequency response is limitless, making it an excellent choice for recording orchestras and church bells. Thanks to its excellent off-axis performance, the KM 183 works very well in stereo and surround setups. With its small size, the KM 183 does not cause image distortion and is well suited for broadcast and radio applications.
