The Neumann KH 120 II is an updated version of the original KH 120 nearfield monitor, incorporating technologies developed for the KH 150. Featuring a two-way active design, integrated DSP and compatibility with Neumann's MA 1 room alignment system, the KH 120 II delivers accurate frequency response, low distortion and impressive bass performance in a compact enclosure.
Compact Design and Key Improvements

The KH 120 II is slightly larger than its predecessor but significantly smaller than the KH 150. It features a 5-inch (130 mm) bass/mid driver and a 1-inch (25 mm) dome tweeter with an elliptical waveguide.
Unlike the original KH 120's die-cast aluminium enclosure, the updated model uses a wooden cabinet with composite polycarbonate front and rear panels. According to Neumann, this construction improves resonance behaviour and manufacturing energy efficiency.
As one of the Neumann Nearfield Studio Monitors, the KH 120 II combines compact dimensions with enhanced electroacoustic performance.
DSP Technology and Acoustic Performance

The KH 120 II uses a 145W amplifier for the bass/mid driver and a 100W amplifier for the tweeter. Its DSP-based excursion limiting helps maintain driver linearity and minimise distortion at higher sound pressure levels.
The low-frequency cutoff reaches 44 Hz at -3 dB, compared with 52 Hz for the original KH 120. Maximum SPL increases from 111 dB to 117 dB under the measurement conditions specified in the review.
Two front-mounted bass reflex ports are designed to minimise unwanted resonances. Sound On Sound's measurements showed no noticeable organ-pipe resonance from the ports.
These improvements give the Neumann Active Studio Monitors range a compact model with substantial bass extension and output capability.
Room Optimisation with Neumann MA 1

The KH 120 II features integrated DSP and supports Neumann's MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment system through Ethernet connectivity.
MA 1 uses a calibrated measurement Microphone to collect acoustic data from seven positions around the main listening area. The software then generates an individual equalisation profile for each monitor to compensate for room-related response variations.
Users can also adjust bass, low-midrange and high-frequency EQ directly using the rear-panel controls.
The KH 120 II supports analogue and S/PDIF inputs, while an additional version provides AES67-compatible Audio over IP connectivity.
Measurements and Listening Impressions

Sound On Sound's measurements revealed a remarkably flat on-axis frequency response, with no significant irregularities.
Second- and third-harmonic distortion were also well controlled, measuring approximately 0.3% at an acoustic output level of 90 dB at 1 metre.
During listening tests, the reviewer highlighted the KH 120 II's neutral tonal balance, exceptional clarity and precisely focused stereo imaging. The monitors revealed fine mix details while providing extended, informative bass reproduction.
Compared with the larger KH 150, the KH 120 II offered slightly less low-frequency extension and maximum output. Nevertheless, its bass and volume capability were considered more than sufficient for many smaller studio environments.
Sound On Sound's Verdict
Sound On Sound regarded the KH 120 II as a highly successful successor to the original KH 120.
Its main strengths include excellent clarity, accurate stereo imaging, tonal neutrality and impressive bass extension for its size.
The reviewer identified no significant disadvantages, concluding that the KH 120 II is an exceptionally capable compact Neumann Professional Studio Monitors solution.
